Hello there! I’m Amie Finkbiner, a licensed professional counselor practicing Schema Therapy in Michigan. I help adults work through trauma and adverse life experiences in order to develop new ways of being. I bring structure AND warmth to this work, because I believe real change only happens when we pair compassion with clarity. Therapy with me is grounded in authenticity, integrity, and respect–for your story, your pace, and your survival strategies. You can count on me to show up every time, fully present for our work, because I know how much energy it takes just to walk through my virtual door.
Origin Story
I’m what my cousin likes to call “a feeler.” I cry when Shadow comes limping over the hill at the end of Homeward Bound, Taylor Swift albums wreck me, and I light up around the people I love. But it wasn’t always this way, and for years I was almost entirely cut off from my emotions. I still cared, but it felt much safer at the time to just disconnect for awhile. I thought, “If I let all this shit in, it’ll break me.” The hard truth is, when we numb the painful stuff, we numb everything. Reconnecting with my emotional life, and understanding why I disconnected in the first place, changed me. It gave me a renewed sense of compassion, a deeper sense of responsibility, and a clear intention to walk alongside others doing the same.
Today, I help my clients navigate the tension between surviving, managing, and thriving. The goal is to help you create a sustainable life that feels like it’s actually worth living. Together, we make space for your strength and your struggle. I’ll challenge patterns that no longer serve you, while honoring the parts of you that needed them for so long. This work can be messy, nonlinear, and even a little weird at times–but it can also be deeply freeing. I don’t expect your healing journey to follow nicely along with a manual or script, but I do believe in your capacity for growth. And I consider it to be the highest privilege to be your companion along that path for a time.
